The Speech for WOW and a live project on ”Poems and Doors”.

Date: 28th.September.2011

When people set alarms to wake themselves up early in the morning, do most of them get up of their bed after it’s ringing? I was fine for a while then later somehow dreams have been so addictive that getting myself up has accordingly turned into a hard job.

The Skills Support Officer from The Art and Design Academy, McNeill Elaine, has given us a short speech about WOW’s main services (World of Work) and as a graduate wanna-be how to develop ourselves into professionals artists for the next couple of years. I have note down some points that I considered imporatnt and the mains are as followings:

1). Recognize and evaluate characteristics of the creative and cultural industry.
2). Understand what is happening around the world. (This is from the cartoonist article I got)
3). Plan our own professional development.
4). Have clear aspirations and be committed to your ambitions.
5). Build a Design Graduate Profile as we develop through out the courses.
6). WOW will ”introduce students to career advisors, student enterprises, local businesses and freelances working withing creative industry”.
7). We can’t just KNOW about what’s going on within the design industry but to enhance them and comprehensively understand the ones that relate to the subject studied.

Also she pointed out some vital authorities that are able to help students with their professional development. We have 3 Careers WoW Supporters who are Jan Logan, Liz Harrison and Gary Douglas, as well as a Business Advisor, Lynn Robertosn. I have encountered with Liz Harrison when I was studying Business Foundation Course in the ISC (International Study Centre), she is a nice person.

We then came across with a poet and an artist who are working on a new installation inside the new Livepool Museum. From what I have heard, they are trying to combine the poems (written by the poet) with some kind of book-binding artesan. The idea was to recreate a whole new concept based on book-binding that in some way it showcases a whole new way of reading poems in an amplified and creatively-designed object, in this case, it’s doors. Basically, the installation organizers wants the poems to be inked on doors for which each is designed according to its designated context using, possibly, different media.

As the poet was reading his poems with a extravagantly good sense of rhythm I have come to realize why I am interested in helping out. The installation itself seems very big and outrageous, it’ll probably be valuable experiences. Yet I am not ACTUALLY interested in it. It’s the thought of ”rushing to look for work plavements in order to get good grades for Professional Development Module” gets into my mind so deeply that it causes my subconscious to like it in a way I am not truly aware.

I am currently thinking of taking on an animation music video project set up by a LIPA Graduate. The idea for the animation she described was to show the influences of zero size culture in modelling and fashion industry on youngsters nowadays, and the animation basically involves a thin model figure cat walking on a platform from left to right, the more she walks the thinner she becomes and eventually turning gaunt and when it reaches the end of the platform it vanishes. And” as the soundtrack finishes, a coffin comes into view”. I am really keen on doing this project, hopefully I will have a meeting with her and the others who offered to help collaboratively to further develop the ideas and maybe brainstorm some new ones.

PS: Honestly speaking, I have no confidence in myself at all in doing anything, but I;d like to try, otherwise not trying when giving the opportunity will be my greatest regret ever. Thus even if I fail, I can still stand up and start again. Jenny has once reminded me. Thank you^^.
